Frustration rushed over me as I stared at the failed exam paper in front of me. I had spent weeks in the library of Goethe University in Frankfurt, studying relentlessly for my Bachelor’s most crucial exam, only to be met with disappointment.
It was a pivotal moment, one that should have served as a wake-up call. However, at the time, I remained oblivious to my own blind spots, unaware that the strategies I had relied upon were ineffective.
Like many others, I naively believed that consuming information, highlighting passages, and re-reading would make knowledge stick to my brain. Little did I know that effective learning required more than the passive absorption of sentences.
A meta-study on learning, memory, and metacognitive processes revealed that most learners, including my former self, hold outdated beliefs and commit errors that can hinder rather than enhance learning effectiveness.
It wasn’t until I became a Teach for All teacher that I learned about learning research and discovered evidence-based principles to learn better and faster.
